Big Commons and Scaleys

So after a tough week for the anglers last week with not a single fish gracing the bank, 7 fresh anglers were here ready to leave their stamp Saturday morning, let’s see how they got on.

First up we have Josh Field who came out second in the draw and fancied his chances in The Stink. After having a good lead around on Saturday morning, he found a nice gravel spot 26 wraps out towards the right-hand side of Baxter’s Hole. Fishing D-rig spinners with a pineapple wafter topped with slow sinking maize over a bed of straight corn, it wasn’t too long til he was off the mark after managing to catch one known as ‘Mammut’ at 62lb 8oz on Monday, at first light, breaking his PB. After losing one after dinner Monday on his short spot, 13 wraps towards the poplars to the right of Tree Line, he soon reset the rod only to have one of his long rods go, leading him to land a beautiful 40lb common known as ‘Browny’s’ boasting its winter colours. Unfortunately, that was it for Josh this week.

Next up we have James Phillips, who had a terrible journey here having a blow out on the way and just to top it off pulled ball 7 out the hat. Surprisingly he still had Big Southerly available and jumped straight in. Opting to fish short with two rods putting one towards the snag at 14 wraps towards Alamo and one further to his right, also at 14 wraps, he was using a mix of house hemp, corn and Creamino crushed boilie with the matching glug over the top. It was the snag rod that did the bites for Jim, also managing to get off the mark at first light Monday morning, where he had an original scaley known as ‘Buzz’z Camo’ at 42lb. With his swim seeming to come alive just before first light each morning, Jim spent the next couple of days sat on his hands, before having his next and last fish on Thursday morning known as ‘Mr Chow’ another original at 49lb 8oz. Well done Jim!

So that’s it for this week, a slightly warmer week compared to recent weeks and with a strong south westerly wind it was great to see someone standing in front of the sign for breaking their PB again, lets hope for more next week.
